Terms of use
This text is a draft. The wording may change before it is final.
These terms are the agreement between you and [Owner name] for using the Starterwise app and this website. Please read them, and the privacy policy.

Our agreement
By creating an account, using the app or using this website you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use Starterwise. In these terms "we" and "us" mean [Owner name]. You can reach us at support@starterwise.com.
Your account and household
- You must be at least 13 years old to use the app.
- Give accurate information, keep your sign-in secure and tell us if you think someone else has used your account.
- Your account belongs to one household at a time. A household has up to five members, including the owner, and members have roles (owner, editor or viewer). Owners decide who is invited and what roles people have.
- Records in a household are shared with its members. Think before you add someone, and do not add personal details about other people without their agreement.
Baking guidance and food safety
- Recipes, timings, temperatures and reminders are guidance. Fermentation depends on your flour, kitchen and starter, so the app shows when to check, not when something is ready. Use your own judgement, look and feel.
- If a starter shows fuzzy growth or pink, orange or red streaks or patches, the app's guidance is to discard it all, wash the jar and start again. If you are unsure whether anything is safe to eat, do not rely on the app to decide.
- Check every recipe against your own allergies and dietary needs. Ingredient substitutions and AI-generated recipes may not suit you.
- Ovens, hot tins and hot water can hurt you. Take normal care in the kitchen.
AI features
Premium includes AI features, such as a baking helper, photo analysis and recipe generation. The answers are produced by AI, can be wrong and may not suit your situation, so check them before you rely on them. The AI features never schedule alarms, mark dough as ready, change a plan you are using or call a starter or food safe. Questions about mould or spoilage go to the app's fixed safety guidance, not to AI.
Each AI request uses credits from your household's monthly allowance, and the app shows the cost and your balance before you submit. We ask for your consent before the first time your text or photos are sent to our AI provider.
Premium subscriptions
Starterwise is free to use. Premium is an optional auto-renewing subscription, sold monthly or annually through the App Store. There is no one-off or lifetime purchase.
- The price, billing period and any free trial are shown in the app, in your local currency, before you subscribe. UK prices include VAT.
- New subscribers who are eligible get a seven-day free trial. Apple decides eligibility, and a trial is available once per subscription group.
- Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase, or when a trial ends. The subscription renews automatically for the same period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the period ends.
- To cancel or change a subscription, open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Deleting the app or your account does not cancel it.
- Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple. Ask at reportaproblem.apple.com.
- Family Sharing is on for both subscriptions, so people in your Apple family group may get Premium too. Sharing Premium with a family member is separate from household membership. A household still needs an invitation to join.
- One Premium member sponsors Premium for their household while they remain a member and their subscription is active. Extra subscribers in the same household do not add up to a bigger allowance.
When Premium ends (it expires, is refunded, or the sponsor leaves), the household returns to the free plan. You keep one active starter and choose which one. Your other starters, photos and history stay readable and can be exported, but are locked until Premium returns. Bakes already under way finish normally. We do not delete your data because a subscription ended.
Your content
You own what you add: recipes, notes, photos, posts and comments. You give us a licence to host, copy, resize and show that content, and to run the automatic and human checks described below, only so we can run the service for you. The licence covers showing your content to the people you chose (your household, your friends or anyone with a link you made public) and ends when you delete the content or your account, apart from copies that others have already received and backups until they expire.
You promise that you have the right to add your content and that it follows these terms and the law. Do not add other people's recipes, writing or photos unless you have the right to share them.
Sharing and public pages
- A public recipe page is a snapshot of what you chose to share. Anyone with the link can see it.
- You can stop sharing at any time in the app. The page then stops working.
- Shared cards, text and exports carry a "Made with Starterwise" line. Premium members can hide it on cards and exports. Public recipe pages always carry it, because they are our pages.
- A recipe you import from a share becomes a recipe in your household and shows where it came from.
- We may remove a shared page or photo that breaks these terms, and the page has a Report link for anyone who sees a problem.
Bake Circle and community rules
Bake Circle is a public community for bakes, starters and recipes, with profiles, follows, reactions and short comments. Posts are for everyone or for followers only, as each person chooses; it has no direct messages. In summary:
- Be kind. No harassment, hate, sexual content, violence or threats.
- No spam or advertising.
- No unsafe food advice, including telling anyone that a starter or food is safe.
- Do not post other people's private information, or photos of people without their permission.
- Only post what you have the right to share.
The full community rules explain how we check posts, what happens when something breaks the rules, and how to report, block and appeal. You accept them before your first post.
Posts, comments and photos are checked automatically before others see them. If the check says no, the content comes back to you with a reason, you can change it and try again, and you can ask for a second look by a person. We may remove content, give a strike, and ban someone from posting for breaking the rules, but only a person confirms a breach. You can appeal a strike or a ban by emailing us.
Using the app properly
Please do not:
- break the law or other people's rights
- try to get into other households' data, or probe or disrupt our systems
- get around limits on starters, AI credits, invitations, sharing or referral rewards, or claim rewards through fake accounts
- copy, scrape or resell the app's content or recipe library
- reverse engineer the app, except where the law allows it
- upload anything harmful, such as malware
Amazon links and our affiliate disclosure
Starterwise may link to products on Amazon (amazon.co.uk and amazon.com). If you buy something after following one of our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We choose what to suggest from our own recipes, your pantry needs and our editorial judgement, and the commission does not change the price you pay. Links open Amazon directly in its app or your browser. Prices, availability and delivery are decided by Amazon, and your purchase is an agreement between you and Amazon. Amazon and the Amazon logo are trademarks of Amazon.com, Inc. or its affiliates.
Our content and licence to you
We own Starterwise, its design, the starter course, the recipe library and other content we provide, or we have the right to use them. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the app on iPhones you own or control, and to use our content for your own baking and for sharing through the app's share features, subject to these terms.
Apple
These terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content, or for maintenance and support, and has no warranty obligation for it beyond refunding the price of a paid app if it fails to meet Apple's requirements. Apple is not responsible for claims about the app, including product liability, legal compliance and intellectual property claims. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. You must also follow the terms of your Apple Account and the App Store.
Changes, suspension and ending
- We may change or stop features, and we will try to give notice of significant changes. We do not promise the app will always be available or error free.
- You can stop using the app and delete your account at any time. See how to delete your account.
- We may suspend or end your access, or remove content, if you break these terms or put others at risk. We will tell you why when we can.
Responsibility
We take care to provide Starterwise with reasonable skill, but baking involves things we cannot control. We provide the app and its guidance "as is". Nothing in these terms limits your legal rights as a consumer, or our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow us to limit. Beyond that, we are not liable for losses we could not reasonably have foreseen, such as ingredients that do not turn into the bread you hoped for, or for services run by others. Where the law allows us to limit liability, our total liability to you for anything connected with the app is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.
Governing law and changes to these terms
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales can hear disputes, but if you are a consumer you keep the protection of the mandatory laws where you live and can bring a claim in your local courts.
We may update these terms, for example for a new feature or a change in the law, and change the date at the top. For significant changes we will give notice before they apply. If you keep using the app after that, you accept the new terms. If you do not, you can delete your account.
